Abstract: A communication device including a receiving unit and a signal processing module having a simulation unit and a decision unit is provided. The receiving unit receives a first burst of a paging message provided from a base station. Base on a reference burst code and an estimated channel impulse response of the communication channel, the simulation unit generates a simulation burst. The decision unit then determines if the paging message is a dummy message in accordance with the first burst and the simulation burst. The decision unit requests the receiving unit to stop receiving the paging message once the paging message is determined to be a dummy message.

Abstract: Techniques for processing an incoming message from premises equipment at a monitoring location. In one embodiment, an event message, including digits with varying amplitudes, is generated at a premises (such as a home, office, factory, etc.) in response to an event at the premises. A communication channel is established between the premises equipment and the monitoring location and the event message is sent from the premises equipment to the monitoring location. The entire event message is evaluated based on the number of digits received compared to expected receiving parameters defined in a communication protocol. A number of possible interpretations of the event message is determined. One or more possible interpretations of the event message are eliminated based on the number of digits in each of the possible interpretations to create a subset of possible interpretations.

Abstract: The device and method for remotely monitoring animal behavior consists of a sensor unit mounted on an animal. The sensor unit utilizes motion sensors to monitor the specific behavioral patterns of the animal. Power management is controlled to turn the system on when specific types of motion are detected. Motion data is wirelessly transmitted to a base station for analysis. Data analysis functions are used to detect and identify the occurrence of characteristic motions. Network decision algorithms analyze the characteristic motions and compute weighted indicators and weighted counter-indicators which are combined into a final diagnostic score. When the final diagnostic score exceeds a threshold value, a specific behavioral pattern is confirmed which may indicate the animal is in a distress situation or experiencing another type of behavior that requires intervention. If distress is detected, the system sends a communication to notify the appropriate personnel that a distress condition exists.

Abstract: A communication system is provided for communication between network nodes and multiple communication controllers. The communication method provides for request timeslot management, assigning request timeslots to individual nodes. In the network, when an individual node has data to transmit, the node transmits a request signal to a communication controller over an assigned timeslot. For a first node in the network area of a first controller communicating with a second node in the network area of a second communication controller, data is relayed between the first and second communication controllers to enable communication between the first and second nodes. Acknowledgement back that communication is successful is made by a node to a controller indicating a grant was successfully received by the node.

Abstract: Communication between a remote locator and a transponder is used to determine the relative position of the transponder. The transponder and locator each include a transmitter and a receiver. The locator transmits an inquiry in the form of a relatively powerful cyclically encoded signal with repetitive elements, uniquely associated with a target transponder. Periodically, each transponder correlates its coded ID against a possible inquiry signal, determining frequency, phase and framing in the process. Upon a match, the transponder transmits a synthesized response coherent with the received signal. The locator integrates multiple cyclical response elements, allowing low-power transmissions from the transponder. The locator correlates the integrated response, determines round-trip Doppler shift, time-of-flight, and then computes the distance and angle to the transponder. The transponder can be wearable, bionically implanted, or attached to, or embedded in, some object.

  • Patent number: 7218242
Abstract: A system and method for a communication apparatus to provide advanced features such as communication channel mobility, billing options for communication charges (for instance reverse billing), and definable accessibility controls. A subscriber apparatus (for instance a wireless communication apparatus) includes pager (such as a page phone) or radiotelephone functions. A caller calls the subscriber apparatus. The caller gains two-way communication with the subscriber apparatus. The subscriber apparatus may include a radio frequency power level monitor to control movement of a communication channel of the subscriber apparatus from a first communication system (for instance a regular cellular system) to a second communication system (for instance a local loop).

  • Patent number: 7212825
Abstract: A network communication system is provided for communication between network nodes, including individual nodes and a central control station node. In the network, signals are transmitted from the central control node to identify specific timeslots in which individual nodes may transmit a request signal to the central control node. When a first individual node has data to transmit, the first individual node transmits a request signal to the central control node in its identified timeslot, the request including randomly generated information for identification of the node. In response to the request signal, the central control node transmits a grant signal along with the randomly generated information back to the first node to allow the first node to identify the grant.

Abstract: A network communication system is provided for communication between network nodes, including individual nodes and a central control station node. In the network, signals are transmitted from the central control node to identify one or more frequencies that the node may transmit. When a first individual node has data to transmit, the first individual node transmits a request signal to the central control node over one or more of its assigned frequencies. In response to the request signal, the central control node transmits a grant signal assigning one or more frequencies to allow the first node to transmit its data.

When a first individual node then has data to transmit, the first individual node transmits a request signal to the central control node in its identified timeslot requesting allocation of time for transmitting a specified amount of data. The first individual node then in response to the grant signal, transmits its data over the specific timeslots.

  • Patent number: 7062281
Abstract: A multi-mode paging system and method of selectively paging an individual through one of a plurality of paging mechanisms. An indication of a paging mechanism for each individual to be paged is stored in a memory device. When an input is received from a user to page the individual, a control processor retrieves the indication of a paging mechanism for the individual to be paged and determines which of the plurality of paging mechanisms is to be utilized to page the individual. The individual may be selectively paged through an on-premises paging system, a wide area paging system, or a telephone such as a cellular telephone. An autodialer may be remotely located and connected by a wireless link to the processor, or the system may dial out using a wireless subscriber unit.

Abstract: A curtailment module is disclosed for enabling an energy provider to send a request to curtail energy use to a user. The curtailment module includes an interface for electronic communications with a temperature control device. A paging module is used to receive the request from the energy provider through a paging network. The curtailment module also includes a processor in electronic communication with the paging module for receiving the request from the paging module. Memory is also included and is in electronic communication with the processor for storing a curtailment message and history data. The curtailment module also includes a sound component in electronic communication with the processor for outputting an audio verification. A code generator is stored in the memory and executable by the processor to generate a verification code using the curtailment message and the history data as inputs.

Content stored on or being processed by a mobile device is analyzed for the presence of predetermined classes of contact identifiers. When a contact identifier belonging to one of the predetermined classes is encountered, it is presented to the user of the mobile device on the display screen and the user interface of the mobile device is provisioned (e.g., softkey assignments and screen displays) for the particular class of contact identifier encountered. The encountered contact identifiers may be used as direct contact identifiers or indirect contact identifiers. Direct contact identifiers are used to initialize the appropriate application for the class of identifier encountered (e.g.

  • Patent number: 6965297
Abstract: A system for delivering page messages to paging units over a wide area is provided through multiple transmission systems. The system has a controller for routing page messages to each paging unit through the transmission system to which the paging unit is registered. Each transmission system periodically sends a system message having at least a unique identifier for the transmission system. Each paging unit receives system messages of at least one of the transmission systems when located in the transmission system's coverage area, and receives page messages from the transmission system registered to the paging unit when located in that transmission system's coverage area. Paging units update their registration with the controller in accordance with the identifier of received system messages different from their current registered identifier via user enabled or automatic means. The controller may resend messages to paging units which were sent during periods of unlikely reception.
