Message Transmitted Using Fixed Length Packets (e.g., Atm Cells) Patents (Class 370/395.1)
  • Patent number: 7430208
Abstract: An apparatus and method of using same for associating a tag with each packet in an ATM switch to eliminate the need for an OVC table, thus saving both egress processing time and memory resources. The tag includes both a type of switching identifier and a per-logical-interface or per-external-VC information field. A packet received by the egress packet processing engine has associated with it (by the control plane) a frame control word containing a new cell header (NCH) corresponding to the OVC on which the packet was received from the fabric. This NCH contains the tag used to expedite egress processing. In one embodiment of the present invention, the tag value is provided in two fields, a tag type and a tag parameter. The tag type represents a code for different data path applications. The tag parameter takes on multiple values based on the tag type.

  • Patent number: 7428235
Abstract: A method for controlling cell transmission on a basis of 1 byte between FIFOs of a UTOPIA interface, thereby performing cell transmission more speedily and more smoothly, which is achieved by advancing start timing of cell transmission by defining active timing of cell enable signal and cell available (CA) signal between FIFOs of the UTOPIA interface to a moment when a 1-byte data is available. The CA signal becomes active (high signal) when a TX FIFO has data with greater than 1 byte and a RX FIFO is able to receive data with greater than 1 byte. The cell enable (Enb) signal becomes active when an input CA signal in the TX FIFO is in a ‘high’ state and the TX FIFO has data with greater than 1 byte to be transmitted, and when an input CA signal in the RX FIFO is in a ‘high’ state and the RX FIFO is able to receive data with greater than 1 byte. As a result, a cell can be transmitted much faster as much as 52 bytes*clock and traffic performance of system can be improved considerably.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for configuring a network interface to support a virtual private network includes storing configuration data at a server on a host computer on the provider network. It is determined without human intervention whether conditions are satisfied for sending the configuration data to a particular node at an edge of the provider network without receiving a request message from the particular node. If it is determined that conditions are satisfied, then the configuration data is sent to the particular node to cause the particular node to configure a particular interface for supporting a virtual private network over the provider network based on the configuration data. The particular node is different from the host. These techniques allow changes in configuration data to be pushed to provider edge nodes without human intervention.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to insert control blocks into a stream of data user blocks. Data user blocks are transmitted onto a network during transmission slots. One of the data user blocks is buffered during one of the transmission slots. Instead of transmitting the buffered data user block during this transmission slot, a control block is transmitted onto the network in the data user block's place. Transmission of the data user block is delayed until the next transmission slot. The control block is inserted at a required position into the stream of data user blocks at a transmit engine, as opposed to a queue manager, leaving the queue manager unconcerned with the insertion details of the control block. Insertion of the control block by the transmit engine enables the queue manager to handle frames containing large numbers of user blocks as a single unit (e.g., such as is the case with AAL-5) and avoid complications related to inserting the control block in the midst of these frames.

Abstract: An active/standby switching system includes two AAL2 (ATM Adaptation Layer Type 2) cell assembling/disassembling processor units (20, 30) as an active system and a standby system so that active/standby switching is carried out between the active system and the standby system. The active/standby switching is carried out by transferring, from one of the AAL2 cell assembling/disassembling processor units (20) which has been the active system to the other AAL2 cell assembling/disassembling processor unit(30) which has been the standby system, handover information to prevent cell loss of AAL2 cells from occurring as a result of the active/standby switching and uncompleted cell data in the course of disassembling, the AAL2 cell assembling/disassembling processor unit (30) to become a new active system receiving the handover information and the uncompleted cell data and carrying out AAL2 cell assembling or disassembling.

Abstract: A fixed broadband wireless data access service providing shared wide-band packet-switched data transport for high speed data access in areas where conventional ADSL service and fiber optic service are unavailable. The wireless data access service is a point-to-multipoint cellular-type network that connects customers to data service providers through the ATM backbone of an existing network. Customers connect to the ATM backbone and data service provider through a cellular grid in which a wireless base station in each cell communicates with the individual customer wireless equipment within its cell site coverage area. The base stations are connected to an ATM backbone switch through wireless and wireline backhaul links. The upstream and downstream bandwidths of the wireless broadband network are engineered in various symmetric and asymmetric configurations to provide a shared packet-switched connection that emulates an uninterrupted, direct wireline ADSL connection.

Abstract: To enable wireless applications which require the use of location information, a method and apparatus for transmitting location data within an ad-hoc communication system is provided herein. During operation, a portion of a packet payload is used to transmit location coordinate information along with an identifier of location estimation technique utilized for a node, as well as other parameters that may be needed for location estimation. Nodes in the communication system calculate their location coordinates using the said portion of packets received from other nodes in the communication system.

Abstract: Provided are apparatuses and methods for transmitting or receiving data packets in a data block in a communication network with a transport protocol. In one example, a loss tolerant TCP protocol is used in which a maximum segment size (MSS) may be adapted to a minimum granularity of a congestion window. Also, proactive forward error correction (FEC) packets may be added to a window of the data block. The number of proactive FEC packets may be determined, for example, based on an estimate erasure rate. In addition, reactive FEC packets may be added to the data block. Also, a receiver may receive data packets in a data block and process a selective acknowledgment (SACK) responsive to the data packets received.

  • Patent number: 7362710
Abstract: A communication system comprising a plurality of sources, a plurality of destinations, and a plurality of switches forming an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network connecting the sources to the destinations. Each switch in the plurality of switches includes a plurality of line cards. The ATM network comprises a plurality of connections where, for each respective connection, one of the plurality of sources is linked to one of the plurality of destinations through the network by linking one or more switches, in the plurality of switches, that is associated with the respective connection. The ATM network further comprises operation administration and maintenance (OAM) cell processing circuitry for detecting a failure in a connection in the network. The failure is localized to the exact line card in a switch associated with the connection that is causing the connection to fail.

  • Patent number: 7352754
Abstract: A data transmitting and receiving device, which transmits and receives ATM cells between the calculation processing modules is described. The ATM-based data transmitting and receiving device includes a transmitting means and a data receiving means. The data receiving means includes a memory controller for controlling storage of successively received ATM cells in corresponding cell buffers, and a memory controlled by it. The memory includes a linked cell buffer, a free cell buffer identifier queue, a receiving state table and a receiving completion state queue. Accordingly, a separate device (e.g., ASIC chip) can be used to transmit and receive ATM cells instead of the conventional calculation processing module so that the transmission efficiency of the ATM cell can be increased and the load of the calculation processing device can be reduced.

  • Patent number: 7349437
Abstract: A system and method for hardware based reassembly of a fragmented packet is shown. The method includes receiving a bandwidth request to transfer a data packet from the data provider. Then, bandwidth is allocated to the data provider, where the allocated bandwidth is less than the requested bandwidth. Next, the present invention receives part of the data packet in the allocated bandwidth from the data provider, where the part of the data packet includes a fragment header, and the fragment header includes a sequence number for the part of the data packet. The part of the data packet is then stored in external memory. Finally, the data packet is reassembled by concatenating in the correct sequence the part of the data packet with other parts of the data packets to create the reassembled data packet.
