Abstract: A method of managing transfer of packets in a packet digital communications network wherein at least some of the packets comprise a plurality of segments is disclosed. The method comprises providing a buffer (104) for storing segments arriving for transmission on a virtual channel, always admitting (150) a segment of a packet on a virtual channel for storage in the buffer (104) when a previous segment of the packet on said virtual channel has been admitted in the buffer (104), rejecting (149) a segment of a packet on a virtual channel for storage in the buffer when any previous segment of the packet on said virtual channel has been rejected for storage, and applying an admission criterion to each first segment of a packet on a virtual channel.

Abstract: Offering vertical services to subscribers and service providers is an avenue to immediately improve the competitiveness of digital subscriber line access service, for example of the type offered by a local exchange carrier. To deliver high-quality vertical services, however, the underlying ADSL Data Network (ADN) or the like needs to establish Quality of Service (QoS) as a core characteristic and offer an efficient mechanism for insertion of the vertical services. The inventive network architecture introduces QoS into the ADN, in a manner that enables the delivery of sophisticated and demanding IP-based services to subscribers, does not affect existing Internet tiers of service, and is cost-effective in terms of initial costs, build-out, and ongoing operations.

To prevent one flow from occupying the entire memory space, a threshold may be provided for the queue. The queue threshold may accommodate the RTT delay of the link. Queue length information about a downstream switch module may be sent to an upstream switch module via cell headers in every credit update period per link. Cell and/or credit loss may be recovered from. Increasing the credit update period reduces the cell header bandwidth but doesn't degrade performance significantly. Abstract: A destination router label is added to Pseudo Wire encapsulated data packets for crossing a Multiple Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. Data arrives at a PW function, which performs PW encapsulation, further adding a PWE control word and a PWE label. The PW function also adds a destination router label (DRL). The DRL is configured at PW creation time with a PW control message (that is, an unsolicited LabelMap message) to a specific edge router. The packet may then be sent to a Traffic Engineering (TE) function, which uses the DRL to make the routing decision for the packet. The routing decision includes adding a PSN tunnel label to replace the DRL label for crossing the transport network. The rest of the processing is conventional PWE3 transport on MPLS; that is, when the packet is received at a second PW function, it removes the PW encapsulations and forwards the packet based on the contents of the PWE label.

Abstract: A method and structure are disclosed for dispatching appropriate data to a network processing system comprising an improved technique for extracting protocol header fields for use by the network processor. This technique includes basic classification of a packet according to the types of protocol headers present in the packet. Based on the results of the classification, specific parameter fields are extracted from corresponding headers. All such parameter fields from one or more protocol headers in the packet are concatenated into a compressed dispatch message. Multiples of such dispatch messages are bundled into a single composite dispatch message. Abstract: Middleware is provided as a control plane for WiMAX control messaging. Each ASN in a WiMAX system is associated with a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server. A plurality of Functional Entities (FEs) are distributed across the ASNs, wherein each FE (or a group of FEs) associated with a SIP agent. Each FE is operable to control a function associated with a subscriber station (SS). The function controlled by a first FE is transferred to a second FE by employing the SIP agents to establish a SIP session between the first and second FEs. WiMAX control messages are then exchanged over the established session to transfer the SS function from the first FE to the second FE. The first and second FEs may be in the same ASN—i.e. the SS mobility is intra-domain—or, the first and second FEs may be in different ASNs—i.e. the SS mobility is inter-domain.

Abstract: An ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) cell transfer apparatus includes an input interface, a switch block, and an OAM cell processing hardware block having a memory unit. The input interface receives an SDH/SONET signal on each of a plurality of first transfer paths to output an input OAM cell corresponding to the SDH/SONET signal to one of a plurality of input ports of the switch block corresponding to the first transfer path for the SDH/SONET signal to be transferred. The switch block receives the input OAM (operation and maintenance) cell from the corresponding input port as an OAM input port to output to the OAM cell processing hardware block together with a port number of the OAM input port, and receives at least one output OAM cell from the OAM cell processing hardware block to output to at least one of the plurality of output ports based on the received output OAM cell.

  • Patent number: 7724661
Abstract: An ATM network traffic shaper is implemented in hardware. The traffic shaper shapes transmit data on one or more virtual circuits (VCs) according to the specified quality of service (QoS) parameters. Thus, the traffic shaper provides for the delivery of associated data cells in accordance with the specified QoS parameters. The traffic shaper is scalable in that the number of supported VCs can be increased with a relatively small increase in the size of the device and associated logic gates. The traffic shaper supports constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR), and unknown bit rate (UBR) service types and generates cell transmit requests with zero cell delay variation (CDVT). The traffic shaper also provides very high resolution in terms of bit rate specification. Varying shaping resolutions are achieved by varying a shaping interval time (SIT) generated by a SIT counter.

Abstract: Disclosed are exemplary techniques for compressing ATM cells by substituting reduced headers for the original headers. A header table may be maintained at the transmitting end whereby headers are stored in table entries based on a table index generated from a hash function applied to the headers. A copy of the header table may be maintained at the receiving end and may be updated by populating idle cells with header table contents. Upon receipt of a reduced ATM cell at the receiving end, the reduced header may be replaced with a full header obtained from the copy of the header table maintained at the receiving end. The present invention further provides techniques for registration and management of hash collisions.

  • Patent number: 7710977
Abstract: A mobile communications base station has a service quality detection unit that monitors and measures communication qualities of wireless terminals currently located in the service area, and a packet classification unit that classifies packets addressed to the wireless terminals into two or more groups based on the measured communication qualities. The base station also has a buffering delay measuring unit that measures buffering delay of the packets for each of the groups. A transmission priority detection unit of the base station determines the order of priority for transmitting the packets based on the measured buffering delay in comparison with a prescribed threshold value. A resource allocation unit of the base station allocates the radio resources to the packets based on the order of priority to transmit the packets to the associated wireless terminals.

  • Patent number: 7706381
Abstract: Approaches are disclosed for switching transport protocol connection keys. A first node sends a keychange request message to a second node, causing the second node to accept subsequent messages digitally signed with a first or second key. The second node sends an acknowledgment message to the first node, causing the first node to accept subsequent messages digitally signed with the first or second key. The first node receives a new message digitally signed with the second key from the second node and determines that there are no remaining messages to be received digitally signed with the first key. In response thereto, the first node only accepts messages digitally signed with the second key and sends a message signed with the second key to the second node, causing the second node to only accept messages digitally signed with the second key.

  • Patent number: 7706394
Abstract: A system and a method to avoid packet traffic congestion in a shared-memory switch core, while dramatically reducing the amount of shared memory in the switch core and the associated egress buffers, is disclosed. According to the invention, the virtual output queuing (VOQ) of all ingress adapters of a packet switch fabric are collapsed into its central switch core to allow an efficient flow control. The transmission of packets from an ingress buffer to the switch core is subject to a mechanism of request/acknowledgment. Therefore, a packet is transmitted from a virtual output queue to the shared-memory switch core only if the switch core can actually forward it to the corresponding egress buffer. A token based mechanism allows the switch core to determine the egress buffer's level of occupation. Therefore, since the switch core knows the states of the input and output adapters, it is able to optimize packet switching and to avoid packet congestion.
