  • Patent number: 7519064
Abstract: A non-blocking switching architecture having a fabric that is capable of switching on two levels by formatting signals crossing the switching fabric as “microcells” having a predetermined format. The microcells are routed by the switching fabric from an ingress line card to destination devices that can include egress line cards and/or processing resources. The processing resources can reformat the signals carried by the microcells to a second format. The reformatted signals can then be packaged as microcells and routed to a selected processing resource to provide switching in the second format. The processing resources transform the switched signals in the second format to a signal in the original format, which is carried by the switching fabric as microcells to an egress line card.

Abstract: There are provided a printing apparatus which can maintain an optimal transfer rate with an external device by an optimal buffer management, and a reception buffer management method thereof. In the printing apparatus according to this invention, assume that data received in unit of packet using a wireless interface from the external device is stored in a plurality of reception buffers. A maximum receivable data amount which can be used for receiving the data from the external device is determined on the basis of the number of the confirmed empty reception buffer(s). The data transmittable amount notified of the external device is then compared with the maximum receivable data amount. When receiving a request from the external device, the printing apparatus replies to the external device to change the notified data transmittable amount, in accordance with the comparison result.

  • Patent number: 7515537
Abstract: A switch segments variable length frames into cells for transmission over a cell-based switch fabric and handles rate differences between the input data rate and the switch fabric data rate. The fabric handles multiple cell packets by maintaining a switch path until a certain number of cells are transmitted as indicated in a length field in the first data cell. The first cell contains a full data payload, and a length field value sufficient to handle a maximum length frame. Subsequent cells can contain less than a full data payload, with the number of valid bytes in the cell being indicated in the length field. The last cell used to segment the frame contains an end of frame indicator. The indicator signals the destination port side of the switch to terminate the packet path in the switch fabric prematurely—before the number of cells indicated in the first data cell.

  • Patent number: 7508756
Abstract: A method for decreasing routing latency of a switching platform comprises identifying ports which have changed their operational state and modifying the port polling code associated with the respective ports so that operational ports are polled for frames to be routed, while non-operational ports are not polled. In one embodiment, the method is implemented in a fiber channel switch. Non-operational ports are identified as having operational states below a pre-determined threshold level of functionality. The polling code for the ports is modified while polling operations are carried out in the switch. The code for a newly operational port is modified by copying into the code one or more instructions that poll the port for a frame and routes the frame. The code for a newly non-operational port is modified by copying into the code a branch instruction that bypasses the remainder of the polling code for the port.

Abstract: The disclosure presents techniques for merging multiple data flows in a network such as a Passive Optical Network (PON). The PON comprises an interface module and network nodes connected to the interface module via an optical fiber link. Each network node further serves client devices. The client devices request multiple data flows, requiring the interface module to serve multiple data flows to a network node for delivery to the devices. The interface module merges received data flows to permit multiple flows to be processed by a single segmentation and reassembly (SAR) engine, reducing hardware cost and complexity within the node. However, subunits associated with different data flows within a merged data flow are not interleaved with one another. Instead, the subunits associated with an original unit of information are transmitted contiguously within the merged data flow, facilitating identification and reassembly of the subunits for a particular microflow.

  • Patent number: 7443858
Abstract: The invention provides an enhanced datagram packet switched computer network. The invention processes network datagram packets in network devices as separate flows, based on the source-destination address pair in the datagram packet. As a result, the network can control and manage each flow of datagrams in a segregated fashion. The processing steps that can be specified for each flow include traffic management, flow control, packet forwarding, access control, and other network management functions. The ability to control network traffic on a per flow basis allows for the efficient handling of a wide range and a large variety of network traffic, as is typical in large-scale computer networks, including video and multimedia traffic. The amount of buffer resources and bandwidth resources assigned to each flow can be individually controlled by network management. In the dynamic operation of the network, these resources can be varied—based on actual network traffic loading and congestion encountered.

  • Patent number: 7440413
Abstract: A system and methods to optimize the resource planning of ADSL services is provided. In an illustrative implementation, a network management system (NMS) communicates with an ADSL network to provision resources for participating users. The provisioning process yields a permanent virtual circuit (PVC). Included in the provisioning process is the creation and management of configuration variables, such as, the virtual path identifier (VPI) and the virtual circuit identifier (VCI). The VPI/VCI combination uniquely identifies each PVC. If the provisioning process is aborted or fails, it may be reanimated by the NMS using the VPI/VCI combination. In this implementation, the VPI may be set to a certain value and the VCI value calculated using ADSL configuration values (e.g. the physical connection position on a first, second, third, etc. ADSL network component.) The deterministic nature of the VPI and VCI configuration variables assist the NMS to track and optimize available resources.

  • Patent number: 7440440
Abstract: A method for call parking in a network telephony system is disclosed. A first user agent and a second user agent establish a communication session, and the second user agent enters a call park number to initiate a call park of the communication session. Subsequently, the call park number and the location of the second user agent are sent to a server, which authorizes the second user agent for call parking. The server then registers the call park number, and the communication session between the first and second user agents is parked. When a third user agent wants to pick up the communication session, the third user agent calls the server by entering the call park number. The server then routes the third user agent to the second user agent, which in turn refers the third user agent to the first user agent. The first and third user agents then establish their own communication session, the communication session between the first and second user agents is terminated, and the call park number is deregistered.
