    Abstract: Carbonyl compounds, such as ketones, aldehydes, esters, amides, anhydrides and carboxylic acids are added to a material, particularly a liquid material as markers. Subsequently the carbonyl compound(s) are identified by measuring the absorbency peak(s) of the carbonyl compounds in the mid-IR range. Carbonyl compounds soluble in non-polar solvents and substantially insoluble in water are particularly suitable for tagging and identifying petroleum fuels. For use in petroleum fuels, the carbonyl compound(s) preferably contains no element other than carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Digital carbonyl marker systems, i.e., systems containing two or more carbonyl compounds in predetermined ratios, can be determined quantitatively with instruments, such as SpecTrace.TM. which measure absorbance in the mid-IR region.

    Abstract: A diesel fuel containing an additive which improves the combustion of soot, for reducing the pollutant emission in the combustion exhaust gases from diesel engines by discontinuous burning-off of soot which has been precipitated in the exhaust gas filter, is described. For this purpose, a lithium, sodium or potassium salt of an aliphatic or aromatic alcohol, of a phenol, of an aliphatic acid or of a naphthoic acid, phenylacetic acid or cinnamic acid is added, singly or as a mixture, to the diesel fuel before the combustion of the latter in the internal combustion engine. As a result of the addition of the alkali metal salts, the ignition temperature of the soot precipitated in the particle filter is reduced, and the soot is oxidized at a temperature which is considerably lower than the normal ignition temperature. The regeneration range for the particle filter is therefore reached much more frequently in real running practice.

    Abstract: A method of deeply desulfurizing a fossil fuel which contains a variety of organic sulfur compounds, some of which are labile to hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and some of which are refractory to HDS, comprising the steps of (a) subjecting the fossil fuel to HDS or a similar method of desulfurizing labile organic sulfur compounds, and (b) subjecting the fossil fuel to biocatalytic desulfurization (BDS) using a biocatalyst which is capable of selectively liberating sulfur from HDS-refractory organic sulfur compounds. In this manner, a fossil fuel is produced which does not generate sufficient levels of hazardous, sulfur-containing combustion products that it requires post-combustion desulfurization when it is burned. Moreover, the deeply desulfurized fossil fuel can be produced using only a mild HDS treatment, rather than requiring conditions which may be severe enough to be detrimental to the fuel value of the desired product.
