Abstract: A specific class of water-borne, water redispersible laminating adhesives is disclosed which is desirable for bonding nonwoven substrates to themselves or to other substrates. The adhesives provide improved bond strength and improved water redispersibility when compared to laminating adhesives currently used for the same purpose. Furthermore, the novel adhesives are much less sensitive to the presence of significant levels of plasticizer than are laminating adhesives currently used, which exhibit reduced water redispersibility when such plasticizers are present in significant amounts. The novel laminating adhesives contain an aqueous styrene/acrylic polymer dispersion prepared by radical-initiated emulsion polymerization of unsaturated monomers in the presence of starch degradation products having a weight average molecular weight range of from about 2500 to 25000 and which are obtainable by hydrolysis in the aqueous phase.

Abstract: Normally hydrophobic foams, such as polyurethane foams and polymerized water-in-oil emulsion foams, are rendered hydrophilic by means of treatment with simple surfactants and hydrophilizing agent salts. Thus, a surfactant-containing foam is treated with a solution of, for example, calcium chloride, and is dried to leave a substantially uniformly distributed residue of hydrated or hydratable calcium chloride on the surfactant-containing internal foam surfaces. In-use, the combination of surfactant and calcium chloride hydrate provides a hydrophilic surface to the foam. Other hydratable calcium or magnesium salts such as magnesium chloride can be used. The resulting hydrophilized foams are suitable for use in absorbent devices, including diapers, sanitary napkins, bandages, and the like.
Abstract: Substantially improved retention of hydrophilicity after exposure to high temperature can be provided on a metal substrate, particularly an aluminum alloy of the type used for heat exchanger fins by an aqueous liquid hydrophilicizing treatment composition containing acrylic and/or methacrylic acid polymer or copolymer, polyether alcohol, and alkali metal silicate. The treatment composition may also contain an anti-microbial agent and additional alkalinizer. The hydrophilicizing treatment is preferably applied over a conventional conversion coating, particularly a chromium phosphate or chromium oxide conversion coating.
Abstract: A water-based wax-free stable emulsion composition, useful as water sealer for wood, concrete and porous materials is disclosed. The water-based sealer composition forms a non-drying film that is water-repellant, flexible, self-sealing and allows passage of water vapor. The water-based sealer composition contains less than 400 grams per liter of volatile organic compounds. The water-based sealer composition is especially suited for above-grade applications in that it protects against absorption of water.

Abstract: A method for extending the open time of an aqueous coating composition is provided. This method extends the time during which an aqueous coating can be applied or rebrushed without damaging the film. Abstract: A process for the preparation of aqueous dispersions of magnetizable polymer particles with a narrow distribution from aqueous dispersions with a wide distribution. The amount of water in the aqueous dispersion with a wide distribution is adjusted so that the proportion by weight of magnetizable polymer particles is between about 1 and 40% of said dispersion. The surfactant concentration of the dispersion after the water adjustment is increased until two phases are obtained: a so-called liquid phase and a so-called solid phase. After separation of these two phases is accomplished, these steps are repeated as desired. An aqueous dispersion with a narrow size distribution is recovered.
Abstract: Polyvinyl chloride surfaces receive a well-adhering, water and ethanol resistant coating with good plasticizer sealing effect by varnishing with an aqueous dispersion of (meth)acrylate polymers that are synthesized from 10 to 90% by weight acrylic and/or methacrylic acid alkyl or cycloalkyl esters with 1 to 10 carbon atoms in the ester group, 90 to 10% by weight acrylic and/or methacrylic acid esters with aromatic groups constituting or contained in the ester group, and small quantities of other monomers. The copolymers are preferably emulsion polymerized and may be synthesized as multiple-phase polymers according to the core-shell model.

C., with an amphophilic compound having an HLB greater than or equal to 10 and a molecular weight greater than or equal to 400. The contacting is carried out at a temperature within the glass transition zone of the polymer, until enmeshing of the polymer chains and of the hydrophobic blocks of the amphiphilic compound has been achieved. The hydrophilic block of the amphiphilic compound carries at least one ion-forming or reactive group. The particles and their dispersions are useful in biological applications.

Abstract: A specially defined amount of hydrogen peroxide is used as a polymerization catalyzer; a specially defined amount and a specially defined kind of a polyvalent metal ion is used; and a specially defined amount of an alkaline substance is used, in order to polymerize a monomer component consisting essentially of only maleic acid, or a monomer component composed of maleic acid and another water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in a specially defined proportion in water, whereby a maleic acid polymer salt, preferably a copolymer salt, of improved biodegradability is produced. The maleic acid polymer salt obtained is superior in biodegradability, has a low residual monomer content, and is useful as a detergent builder and as a scale inhibitor, etc.
Abstract: The subject invention relates to a process for treating an emulsion of a crosslinked elastomeric polymer containing residual hydrazine to obtain a latex of soluble elastomeric polymer having a reduced concentration of residual hydrazine therein, said process comprising the addition of ozone to said emulsion in an amount and under conditions which are sufficient for the ozone to react with the crosslinked elastomeric polymer and the residual hydrazine to produce a latex of soluble elastomeric polymer having a reduced level of residual hydrazine therein. The process of the present invention also improves the color of latex by removing color-bodies, such as benzoquinone, which may be present in the original latex.

Abstract: A graft copolymer having dispersion stabilizing effect, which comprises on the carbon backbone thereof a polymer side chain comprising a carbon chain having a molecular weight of 1,000.about.100,000, a fluorine atom containing fluorine side chain and a hydrophilic side chain containing a hydrophilic group, the total mean molecular weight of said graft copolymer being 5,000 or more. Abstract: A process for preparing aqueous polymer solutions wherein a section of a fluid conduit through which a stream of liquid polymer product flows contains spaced static mixers. Heated water from a heat exchanger surrounding the section of conduit containing the mixers is introduced to a reactor to function as reaction water. The static mixers are spaced apart enough to enable the heat exchanger to sufficiently cool the liquid polymer product. The mixers function to mix other liquid agents with the liquid polymer product and to mix together warmer and cooler quantities of liquids encountered in the conduit.

Abstract: A method of carrying out a continuous aqueous emulsion copolymerization using a single continuously stirred tank reactor to reduce the particle size distribution and the presence of over-sized particles comprises, slowly supplying to a reactor the materials used in the copolymerization, including the monomers which are copolymerized, while maintaining conditions causing copolymerization to proceed until the reactor is filled. The supply is continued while maintaining those conditions until the total supply is in the range of from about 1.5 to about 5 reactor volumes. The excess material in the reactor is removed therefrom and collected in one or more separate vessels, and the product of the copolymerization is then combined and mixed to form a uniform product. The composition copolymerized can be changed during the copolymerization. The emulsion copolymer product is particularly useful in latex paints where it improves the gloss and scrub resistance of the paint.
Abstract: The invention provides an aqueous coating composition curable at ambient temperature comprising a polyacetoacetate; a polyamino amide having an amine number of 60-1000; and either a nitroalkane, a formic acid ester, or an organic compound occurring in at least 2 tautomeric forms, and in one of the tautomeric forms a labile hydrogen atoms is linked to a carbon atom. A process of coating a substrate with such composition is also provided.
Abstract: The present invention relates to low odor coalescing aids for latex paints comprising 2-alkyl-1,3-hexanediol alkyl esters ##STR1## These coalescing aids are incorporated into latex paints in an amount sufficient to speed curing and lower curing temperatures.

Abstract: A method for forming shaped hydrogel articles such as soft contact lenses wherein hydrophilic monomers are mixed with an inert diluent prior to polymerization, and the diluent is replaced with water following the polymerization. Abstract: A process for the preparation of aqueous polymer dispersions comprising polymerizing compounds with unsaturated ethylenic bonds at a temperature of 10.degree. to 100.degree. C. in the presence of an at least partially water-soluble free-radical initiator and at least one water-soluble protein and optionally present conventional adjuvants with the starting mixture containing not more than 40% of the total monomers and the remaining monomer being added by metering during the polymerization, the initiators being at least one member of the group consisting of ketone peroxides and organic hydroperoxides in an amount of at least 30 mmol per kg of total monomer mixture and optionally present water-soluble reducing agents and the amount of protein being at least 3% by weight based on the total monomer weight and at least 30% by weight is added during the polymerization and the isoelectric point of the protein is not reached or exceeded during polymerization.

Abstract: A dispersion of water soluble or water swellable polymer in water immiscible liquid is made by reverse phase polymerization utilizing a dispersing system comprising a polymerization stabilizer and the resulting dispersion, optionally after dehydration, may be distributed into water utilizing a distributing system. The dispersing system or the distributing system, or both, includes at least one non-ionic compound selected from C.sub.6-12 alkanols, C.sub.4-12 alkylene glycol monoethers and their C.sub.1-4 alkanoates, C.sub.6-12 polyalkylene glycol monoethers and their C.sub.1-4 alkanoates and benzyl alcohol. Novel dispersions are made by reverse phase polymerization and, in particular, include a non-ionic compound selected from C.sub.4-12 alkylene glycol monoethers, their C.sub.1-4 alkanoates and C.sub.6-12 polyalkylene glycol monoethers and their C.sub.1-4 alkanoates. When the polymer is water soluble a solution of it in water can be made by distributing the dispersion into water.
Abstract: Bis-semiesters of sulfosuccinic acid with polyether diols based on ethylene oxide/propylene oxide and/or their alkali metal and/or ammonium salts as surfactants, i.e., agents for reducing the surface tension of aqueous substrates such as water or aqueous solutions, as dispersants, wetting agents and leveling agents. Another aspect of the invention relates to the use of such bis-semiesters and/or such salts as emulsifiers in the emulsion polymerization of water insoluble monomers.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a class of water soluble complex polymers of relatively low molecular weight, which have been found to be improved drag reducing agents. These complex polymers are a mixture of a cationic copolymer having a water soluble polymer backbone and an anionic copolymer having a water soluble polymer backbone. The solutions of these complex polymers are improved drag reducing agents for aqueous systems at low concentrations (i.e., 10 to 500 ppm) relative to individual solutions of the copolymers which make upon the polymer complex.
