Measurement System Patents (Class 702/127)
  • Patent number: 8346494
Abstract: The physical quantity measurement device involves a terminal unit, a sensor, a storage unit, an output unit, a communication unit, a control unit, and a discriminating unit. The terminal unit has a power terminal, an output terminal, and a ground terminal. The communication unit uses the power terminal in order to receive a serial signal from an external device. The control unit has an adjusting mode and a normal mode. The discriminating unit decides that the external device requests either the adjusting mode or the normal mode based on whether or not an electrical potential of each of the power terminal and the output terminal satisfies a predetermined condition. The control unit selects the normal mode when the discriminating unit decides that the external device requests the normal mode, and selects the adjusting mode when the discriminating unit decides that the external device request the adjusting mode.

Abstract: Systems and methods for analysis of data associated with fluid flow through a conduit and potential control of the fluid flow. In one embodiment, a method includes a data processing unit obtaining from a sensor a signal representing a series of measurements of a physical parameter associated with fluid flow through the conduit. The data processing unit performs singular spectral analysis of this signal and thereby identifies recurring, possibly non-sinusoidal patterns in the signal. The data processing unit may construct a second signal from some or all of the recurring patterns identified in the first signal. Alternatively, the data processing unit may identify recurring patterns in the signal which are indicative of corresponding conditions associated with the fluid flow through the conduit. The data processing unit may then initiate control functions responsive to the recurring patterns and associated conditions.

Abstract: Anomaly sign detection methods such as those found in plants cannot detect anomalies when relevant sensor information is not acquired, and while it is possible to detect anomalies through changes in sensor output when manual operations are performed, it is difficult to distinguish between anomalies such as those caused only by the sensor signal and actual anomalies which should be detected. The disclosed method uses event signals, which contain a signal based on the status of a unit unable to acquire sensor information and a signal based on human operations. An event sequence is extracted from an event signal outputted from a piece of equipment and grouped by clustering, then a frequency matrix is created for the alarms generated within a prescribed interval of an event sequence, and a prediction of alarms with a high probability of occurring for an event sequence is output on the basis of the frequency matrix.

Abstract: Protection, measurement and control IEDs in a substation compute if switches they control may be operated safely, according to interlocking rules or physical principles as well as the dynamic topology of the substation. The IEDs have access to the substation electrical topology, to real-time information generated by other IEDs, and to the rules for interlocking. A standardized Substation Configuration Description (SCD) of the substation for which a Substation Automation system is intended, and a standardized description of the implemented device functions or capabilities of an individual IED are utilized. The substation topology is available from SCD file, real time information about the position of switches and line voltage/current can be obtained via an appropriate protocol, and the interlocking rules are available in script form. These features apply both to simulated and real devices, and increase system testing possibilities by supporting an efficient configuration of a simulation.

  • Patent number: 8249827
Abstract: A diagnostic method and system is described for diagnosing an operating condition of a conductive particulate matter sensor. The sensor has a substrate with electrical resistance that varies with temperature and two electrodes on the substrate adapted to collect particulate matter between the electrodes, thereby establishing an electrically conductive path through collected particulate matter between the electrodes that can be detected by measuring electrical resistance between the electrodes, Relect. The diagnosis is performed by heating the substrate in the area between the electrodes and detecting whether resistance varies with temperature as expected, and then cooling the substrate back down and detecting whether resistance varies with temperature as expected. If resistance varies as expected during both heating and cooling, then a validation is diagnosed that the sensor is in proper operating condition if resistance increases in a manner consistent with evaporation of condensate.

Abstract: A measurement method in which, at the start of a measurement chain, a measured variable is picked up and is further-processed over the course of the measurement chain by conversion to generate a measurement result, where the original or converted measured variable is modulated at a predetermined modulation frequency at a first point in the measurement chain. At a second point in the measurement chain or sequence, which is after the first point in the direction of further-processing, a variable is added to the converted measured variable. The measurement chain or sequence is calibrated using different known values for the measured variable, where different vectors are obtained that define a characteristic, and an unknown value for the measured variable is determined from that point of the characteristic at which the vector obtained in the process or its extension intersects the characteristic.

Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and systems are provided for measuring the supply of a consumable product/energy source, such as electrical power, to a facility over time and analyzing the measurements to determine the consumption or supply of the product by one or more loads and/or sources in the facility, and to determine induced and residual heat flow through the facility's envelope. Various aspects compare the measured supply of the consumable product to a database of consumption signatures, which characterize access to the consumable product by particular users. Operating conditions and facility characteristics, such as temperatures, load factors, insulation factors, etc., may be further considered in determining a particular user's access of the consumable product. To aid in the controlling of energy use, thermal resistance factors of the building are determined, which are based on the induced and residual heat flow through the facility.
