Computer Power Control Patents (Class 713/300)
  • Patent number: 11307634
Abstract: Maintaining historical power level metadata for dynamic voltage and frequency scaling of processor instructions is disclosed. A power predictor receives, from a power controller that controls voltage and/or frequency of a processor core of a processor device, a processor core power quantifier that corresponds to a voltage or frequency of the processor core while executing a processor instruction. The power predictor, based on the processor core power quantifier, stores an instruction power level in association with the processor instruction. The power predictor subsequently determines that the processor instruction is to be executed by the processor core at a future point in time. The power predictor accesses the instruction power level previously stored in association with the processor instruction. The power predictor, prior to the processor instruction being executed by the processor core, communicates to the power controller a proposed power level based on the instruction power level.

  • Patent number: 11281282
Abstract: Technologies exist that allow for power to be supplied over a data connection, e.g., Power over Ethernet (PoE). Power sourcing equipment (PSE) supplies power to a powered device (PD) over the data connection. There may be applications in which it is desired or necessary to insert an intermediary device on a data connection between the PSE and the PD. An intermediary device is disclosed that can be inserted between a PSE and a PD. The intermediary device attempts to power itself using power supplied by the PSE over the data connection, rather than using an auxiliary power supply. In some embodiments, the intermediary device acts like a PD and requests from the PSE enough power for both itself and the actual PD. The intermediary device then also acts as a PSE to deliver unused power over the data connection to the actual PD.

Abstract: This application relates to techniques that adjust the sleep states of a computing device based on proximity detection and predicted user activity. Proximity detection procedures can be used to determine a proximity between the computing device and a remote computing device coupled to the user. Based on these proximity detection procedures, the computing device can either correspondingly increase or decrease the amount power supplied to the various components during either a low-power sleep state or a high-power sleep state. Additionally, historical user activity data gathered on the computing device can be used to predict when the user will likely use the computing device. Based on the gathered historical user activity, deep sleep signals and light sleep signals can be issued at a time when the computing device is placed within a sleep state which can cause it to enter either a low-power sleep state or a high-power sleep state.

  • Patent number: 11237616
Abstract: A method, computer program product, and/or system associates a number of tokens with a plurality of frequency domains (for example, cores) of a central processing unit (CPU) computer chip. The number of tokens allotted to the CPU is based on the CPU power budget. Cores are organized as a ring topology. A token pool traverses the ring, picks up excess tokens from cores having excess tokens, and gives the tokens to cores that need additional tokens. Tokens acquired by a core allows the core to increase operating frequency by an increment represented by the tokens. Consequently, power usage is weighted toward heavily loaded cores and away from lightly loaded cores. Overall power usage of the CPU remains within a power budget. The method budgets power optimally to sustain turbo frequencies for longer durations by not allowing control units to increase frequency in absence of any useful high frequency benefiting workload.

Abstract: A robot operates using electrical power. An application subsystem provides application functionality such as processing speech, performing video calls, retrieving information responsive to a user request, presenting audio or video content, and so forth. A mobility subsystem includes sensors, software, and hardware that allows the robot to move about an environment. The application subsystem operates using electrical power from a first battery while the mobility subsystem operates using electrical power from a second battery. An electrical interconnect allows for the transfer of electrical power between the subsystems. A power management module uses information about previous tasks performed by the robot that involved the application subsystem and the mobility subsystem to develop power training data.
