  • Patent number: 8185912
Abstract: A method, system, and medium are provided for re-routing messages from a particular parallel queue instance that is experiencing below normal message throughput by lowering the priority setting of the particular queue instance. The messages are re-routed to the other parallel queue instances by a load balancing algorithm that transfers messages to queue instances having a higher priority setting. A series of determinations are made, prior to lowering the priority setting, to confirm that lowering the priority setting for the queue instance is the preferred response to the decreased throughput for the queue instance.

  • Patent number: 8175846
Abstract: The present application relates to a method of splitting a fault condition including receiving evidence observations of a monitored system from monitors connected in a many-to-many relationship to the failure modes, generating a fault condition, computing a relative probability of failure for each failure mode in the fault condition. When there is more than one failure mode in the fault condition, the method includes computing a relative probability of each pair of failure modes in the fault condition, ranking the computed relative probabilities of the individual failure modes and the computed relative probabilities of the pairs of failure modes. If the highest ranked failure mode is a pair of failure modes, the fault condition is split based on the failure modes in the highest ranked pair of failure modes are split. If the highest ranked failure mode is an individual failure mode, a failure is isolated based on the ranking.

  • Patent number: 8176101
Abstract: A system, computer implemented method, and computer readable storage medium is provided which enables customers of an establishment to collaboratively reject a media file that is currently playing and/or pending to be played within that establishment by entering data into a personal wireless portable computing device on their person, for example a cellular telephone. Upon entering a rejection request, and where necessary an establishment identifier, a message is sent over a wireless link to a media server which performs a series of logical tests to determine if the media file is actually terminated prior to full completion of play. In this way, a plurality of separate customers may use their portable computing devices to collaboratively reject specific musical media file selections that are currently playing or currently pending for play within a particular physical establishment.

  • Patent number: 8156220
Abstract: A method is provided for transmitting user data from a selected one of a plurality of data pipes. The method includes having a ring manager select one of the data pipes from a pool of the data pipes for transmission of the user data. The data is transmitted from the selected one of the data pipes at least one packet switching network. The data pipe detects whether there was an error in the transmission. If there an error detected, the data pipe generates an error interrupt for the ring manager. The ring manager detects the error interrupt and generates an error interrupt for a CPU. The ring manager removes the selected one of the data pipes from the pool of data pipes for a predetermined period of time while the ring manager continues to work on other tasks until the time has expired. During pipe retirement, the physical pipe removed from the pool of pipes is disabled and the router will then direct orphan packets to the error ring.

  • Patent number: 8095865
Abstract: Various technologies and techniques are disclosed for managing layout updates to user interface elements. A dirty state of user interface elements is tracked in a tree with multiple nodes of user interface elements. The dirty state allows dirty subtrees of the nodes to be identified. A root node is identified for each of the dirty subtrees. Affected portions of the tree are updated, starting with the root node that was identified for each of the dirty subtrees. As part of the update process, changes to ancestor nodes are detected and used to make a layout process more efficient. For example, any layout processes that are currently being performed on any descendant nodes of a changed ancestor are abandoned, and the layout process is resumed at the changed ancestor. After updating affected portions of the tree, the updated user interface elements are then rendered on an output device.

  • Patent number: 8087029
Abstract: Resources to be used by concurrent threads in a multithreaded processor are allocated based on thread types of the threads, and thread-type-based criteria governing resource allocation decisions are dynamically modified based on feedback information indicating the degree to which various thread types are using the resource. For each of at least two thread types, an amount of the resource is reserved, and amounts currently allocated are tracked. When an allocation request for a new thread is received, the allocation is made or not based on the new thread's type, the amount of the resource reserved for that type, and the amount currently allocated to threads of that type. If, based on feedback information from the allocation decision, the amount of the resource reserved for one thread type is determined to be insufficient, the reserved amounts are modified to better meet the demand.

  • Patent number: 8037341
Abstract: A system and associated method for determining a recovery time for a resource in a heterogeneous computing environment comprising interdependent resources. A graph for the resource representing all sequence dependencies and all group relations are created. The recovery time may be a cumulative startup time or a cumulative shutdown time of the resource considering interdependencies of the resource to other resources. The recovery time for all support resources having sequence dependencies with the resource is calculated and each node representing the support resources are removed from the graph. Then the recovery time for all member resources left in the graph that have group relations with the resource is calculated per a group type of the resource. The recovery time for the resource is a sum of the recovery time of all support resources, the recovery time of all member resources, and a unit recovery time of the resource.

  • Patent number: 8037208
Abstract: A method and system for restoring basic functionality to a portable computer system via a server accessed remotely by telephone. A user of a portable computer system which has lost data and software which was held in volatile memory may connect to a server to restore basic functionality to the portable computer system. The server may be an enterprise or a web-based server. The connection may be made, for instance, over a 1-800 or a 1-900 telephone line. The server transfers sufficient software to the RAM of the portable computer for it to regain basic functionality. For example, synchronization software may be transferred to the portable computer. The portable computer may then use the synchronization software to synchronize via the server or host connection more fully in order to restore lost data or lost software applications that were stored on a server or on a host computer system.

  • Patent number: 8024053
Abstract: An instruction converting unit converts the data form of an instruction of an operation received by a receiving unit to the data form of a safety instrumentation system from the data form of a plant control system. An operation carrying out unit receives the instruction of the operation obtained by the instruction converting unit and an original instruction of the safety instrumentation system to carry out the operations, and preferentially carries out the operation of the original instruction of the safety instrumentation system when both the instructions compete with each other.

Abstract: An application management system identifies a mobile device for use in a vehicle, home, or place of business, each of which includes a processor and is designed to function in a multiprocessor system. The mobile device is connected and configured into the multiprocessor system when a type of data used by the mobile device conforms to a type of data used in the multiprocessor system. A stored application in the multiprocessor system is identified that employs a same data type utilized on the mobile device. The stored application is run which includes taking over control and operation of the mobile device and process data received from the mobile device. Security is used to allowed to access the multiprocessor system.

  • Patent number: 8018841
Abstract: Interworking an Ethernet Ring network with an Ethernet network with traffic engineered trunks (PBT network) enables traffic engineered trunks to be dual homed to the Ethernet ring network to enable for protection switching between active and backup trunk paths in the PBT network. In one embodiment, the active path will terminate at a first bridge node on the Ethernet ring network and the backup path will terminate at a second bridge node on the Ethernet ring network. Trunk state information is exchanged between the bridge nodes to enable the bridge nodes to determine which of the active and backup paths should be used to forward data on the trunk. Upon a change in trunk state, a flush message is transmitted on the Ethernet ring network to enable the nodes on the Ethernet ring network to relearn the path to the new responsible bridge node.

  • Patent number: 8015252
Abstract: A system provides high availability electronic message forwarding. When an electronic message is communicated to a first server, a copy of the electronic message is maintained at a second server. The electronic message is maintained on both servers until the electronic message is successfully communicated to a third server. After the message is delivered to the third server, the electronic message is removed from both the first server and the second server. If the first server fails to communicate the electronic message to the third server, the second server does so.
