Abstract: A length measuring apparatus is provided that combines upper data with lower data and then outputs the composite data. The apparatus monitors taking down or up a digit of upper data or lower data and synchronization of lower data, thus preventing an occurrence of reading error. When an A/D area showing an area of lower data matches with an upper area quadrant showing an area of upper data (R2, R3), the upper count value outputting the upper data is output without any change. When the quadrant (0, 1, 2, 3) of the A/D area does not match with the quadrant (0, 1, 2, 3) of upper area because of an erroneous timing of a digit-taking-up of upper data (R1, R4), +1 or −1 is added to the upper count value. Thus, the continuity of a measured value can be obtained when the scale is being moved.

Abstract: A measuring system for making accurate measurements when cutting building material to fit odd or uneven shapes. The measuring system comprises two types of measuring blocks. The first block is used to measure distances between two uncovered wall studs or joists, and the second block is used to measure distances between an uncovered wall stud or joist and a surface which is covered with a material such as wallboard. By nailing the blocks around the perimeter of the opening, that the building material will cover, and using a plurality of tape measures to obtain at least two measurements from two fixed points to selected points around the perimeter of the opening, accurate dimensions may be obtained regardless of how out of plumb or uneven the opening may be. The system also includes a jig for transferring these dimensions onto the material to be cut, and a tool that can be attached to the end of a tape measure to obtain an accurate mark on the material to be cut.

Abstract: In a system for determining the spacing between axles on a vehicle, problems associated with the determination in a stop-and-go situation are overcome with a sensor array system wherein a first sensor is spaced from an array of sensors by a predetermined distance. The total length of the span of all the sensors must be greater than largest axle spacing on the vehicle to be measured. When two axles simultaneously trigger sensors, those triggered sensors' positions are sent to a computer and the axles spacing is computed and recorded. The system operates independently of the speed of the vehicle.

Abstract: An apparatus for making tenons and mortises includes a table with a first opening in the top surface thereof. The top surface is disposed for receiving a sliding base assembly for a cutting device having a second opening therein. A work-piece holding assembly is detachably connected to a front portion of the table. The table and sliding base assembly cooperate to define the movement of the sliding base assembly in relation to said first opening. The work-piece holding assembly is positionable at preselected angles and varying vertical positions in relation to the top surface of the table.

  • Patent number: 5287627
Abstract: An automatic plumb, level, pointing and distance measuring tool uses a visible laser diode to project a beam in any of several different modes through a beam exit window. The tool, approximately the size and shape of a tape measure, can be placed on one edge to project a tilt-compensated vertical beam. Placed on another edge 90.degree.-rotated, the tool projects through the same exit window a tilt-compensated horizontal beam. When laid on either of its larger flat sides, the tilt compensation becomes inoperative and the tool projects a beam which is fixed relative to the housing. Acoustic distance measurement is facilitated using a second component or target side device which receives both a light beam an acoustic signal simultaneously projected from the laser tool across a space to be measured. A receiver in the target side device first detects arrival of a characteristically modulated or pulsed light beam, received at a photodetector on the target side device, and then receives the acoustic signal.

Abstract: Markers particularly adapted for golf courses have a base with numerical indicia formed thereon. The indicia are preferably raised above the base and have a color that contrasts with the color of the base. In one embodiment the base and the numerical indicia both have upstanding fibril members which resemble the grass surface surrounding the yardage marker. The markers are formed in a mold wherein a fusible material, which may be a vinyl plastisol, having the color desired for the numerical indicia is introduced into the indicia-forming cavities in the mold and gelled. The fusible material having the color desired for the base is then poured into the base-forming cavity. An anchoring fitting is inserted into the base-forming cavity so that a portion thereof will be encapsulated in the material forming the base. After all the components of the marker are received within the mold, it is heated to fuse the fusible material within the mold into an integral whole.

  • Patent number: 5175415
Abstract: Traction apparatus for driving a vehicle and accurately sensing the distance traveled, in which a drive mechanism is encircled by a separate ring-shaped encoder wheel. The encoder wheel, which is part of a travel-sensing mechanism, nests annularly with the drive mechanism so that the width of the combination is minimized. The travel-sensing mechanism can be assembled to the vehicle without disturbing the drive mechanism. There is enough radial clearance in the toroidal encoder wheel to permit the drive mechanism to move up and down within the encoder wheel. The encoder wheel has approximately the same outside diameter as the drive wheel, so certain common-mode measurement errors cancel. The encoder wheel and the drive wheel are approximately concentric and closely spaced laterally to minimize measurement errors that would otherwise occur upon turning of the vehicle.

Abstract: Inaccuracies in measurement of the separation of a pitched horseshoe from a target stake are substantially reduced by a measuring device that is configured to engage the target stake such that surface anomalies in the stake do not influence the accuracy of the measurement. The measuring device is comprised of a generally elongated solid body having a generally circular aperture adjacent one end of the body, the diameter of the aperture exceeding the width of the target stake, so that the device may be placed over the stake and a far edge portion of the aperture, that is adjacent to the one end of the body, may abut against that portion of the stake which faces away from the pitching direction. A sequence of gradation markings are formed on a second portion of the flat body, which is spaced apart from the one end of the body. In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a scoring device for providing an indication of the score of the game during the progress of the game.
