  • Patent number: 9151946
Abstract: A method of manufacturing an electrowetting display device includes a preliminary partition wall pattern formed on a lower substrate on which a pixel electrode of an oxide series and an insulation layer are formed. The preliminary partition wall pattern is disposed along a boundary of the pixel electrode. A water-repellent layer including a self-assembled monolayer having a hydrophobic property is formed on the lower substrate. A portion of the preliminary partition wall pattern and the water-repellent layer formed on the preliminary partition wall pattern are removed to form a partition wall pattern on the insulation layer and to form a water-repellent pattern on the pixel electrode and the insulation layer between partition walls of the partition wall patterns. A fluid layer is formed on the lower substrate on which the water-repellent pattern is formed. The lower substrate and an upper substrate are combined with each other.

Abstract: A method to control thermal energy transport uses mobile coherent interfaces in nanoscale ferroelectric films to scatter phonons. The thermal conductivity can be actively tuned, simply by applying an electrical potential across the ferroelectric material and thereby altering the density of these coherent boundaries to directly impact thermal transport at room temperature and above. The invention eliminates the necessity of using moving components or poor efficiency methods to control heat transfer, enabling a means of thermal energy control at the micro- and nano-scales.

Abstract: A method for producing an electrically conductive thin film on a substrate is disclosed. Initially, a reducible metal compound and a reducing agent are dispersed in a liquid. The dispersion is then deposited on a substrate as a thin film. The thin film along with the substrate is subsequently exposed to a pulsed electromagnetic emission to chemically react with the reducible metal compound and the reducing agent such that the thin film becomes electrically conductive.

  • Patent number: 8947826
Abstract: A durable wear-resistant coating consists of an atomically mixed layer on the surface of the head or media which is developed by bombardment of the surface with energetic C ions with optimized parameters. This mixed layer is covered with a hard DLC overcoat. This mixed interlayer is able to strongly bond the overcoat to the head or media substrate and improve the tribological properties of the overcoat. In this method a very thin layer of a carbide former material can be used as an interlayer before bombarding the surface with C ions which provides a composite interlayer containing C and species from interlayer and substrate. This composite interlayer bonds the DLC overact to the ceramic substrate of the head or the metallic substrate of the media. This interlayer by itself is protective enough to protect the head media of the hard drives against wear and corrosion.

Abstract: A thermoelectric device and method based on creating a structure of nanoclusters in a composite metal and insulator material by co-depositing the metal and insulator material and irradiating the composite material to create nanoclusters of metal within the composite material. In one variation, the composite material may be continuously deposited and concurrently irradiated. A further variation based on a multilayer structure having alternate layers of metal/material mixture. The alternate layers have differing metal content. The layer structure is irradiated with ionizing radiation to produce nanoclusters in the layers. The differing metal content serves to quench the nanoclusters to isolate nanoclusters along the radiation track. The result is a thermoelectric device with a high figure of merit. In one embodiment, the multilayer structure is fabricated and then irradiated with high energy radiation penetrating the entire layer structure.

Abstract: A gaseous p-xylylene monomer, formed by reacting xylene with a monatomic oxygen source, is mixed with a functional gaseous monomer. The resulting mixture may be deposited and solidified on a substrate, which may optionally be exposed to a photoinitiating light energy and/or a permittivity enhancing electric or magnetic field. Alternatively, the resulting gaseous mixture may be trapped and condensed in a condenser, which may contain a solvent to facilitate trapping. The condensate may be mixed with a tertiary substance, e.g., another monomer, a reactive substance or an inert material.

Abstract: This disclosure demonstrates successfully using single, polycrystalline, hot pressed ceramic, and thin film Fe doped binary chalcogenides (such as ZnSe and ZnS) as saturable absorbing passive Q-switches. The method of producing polycrystalline ZnSe(S) yields fairly uniform distribution of dopant, large coefficients of absorption (5-50 cm?1) and low passive losses while being highly cost effective and easy to reproduce. Using these Fe2+:ZnSe crystals, stable Q-switched output was achieved with a low threshold and the best cavity configuration yielded 13 mJ/pulse single mode Q-switched output and 85 mJ in a multipulse regime.
