    Abstract: The bonding of two materials through hydroxide-catalyzed hydration/dehydration is achieved at room temperature by applying hydroxide ions to at least one of the two bonding surfaces and by placing the surfaces sufficiently close to each other to form a chemical bond between them. The surfaces may be placed sufficiently close to each other by simply placing one surface on top of the other. A silicate material may also be used as a filling material to help fill gaps between the surfaces caused by surface figure mismatches. A powder of a silica-based or silica-containing material may also be used as an additional filling material. The hydroxide-catalyzed bonding method forms bonds which are not only as precise and transparent as optical contact bonds, but also as strong and reliable as high-temperature frit bonds. The hydroxide-catalyzed bonding method is also simple and inexpensive.

One or more layers of the quartz cloth (13) are disposed over both open ends of the honeycomb, the total thickness of the layers on each side of the honeycomb being 0.06 inches. A layer of a paint (15) of polysiloxane containing titanium dioxide is optionally placed over the outermost layer of the resin impregnated quartz cloth. The radome is fabricated by initially providing the honeycomb, placing the resin-impregnated cloth thereover and then heating so that some of the resin penetrates into the honeycomb and some of the resin also pyrolyzes to form holes in the resin-impregnated cloth layers.

    Abstract: A process for making an aluminum alloy lighting sheet product having a reflective surface protected by a UV-stable polymer coating. An aluminum alloy sheet is chemically brightened in an aqueous acidic solution, conversion coated, and then coated with a UV-stable polymer. Alternatively, an aluminum alloy sheet is chemically etched in an aqueous alkaline solution, conversion coated, and then coated with a UV-stable polymer. Preferably, the UV-stable polymer contains about 0.5-10 wt. % amorphous silica particles. In another embodiment, an aluminum alloy sheet surface is cleaned, chemically conversion coated and then coated with a coating composition containing a UV-stable polymer and 0.5-10 wt. % of about 0.5-5 microns.

The adhesive comprises a polyamide based on dimerized fatty acid, preferably having an amine value of less than 2, and at least one heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, preferably selected from the group consisting of alkyl tin carboxylate compounds and epoxy compounds. The heat stabilizer is preferably present in an amount of 0.2% to 10.0% by weight of the composition. Also provided is a method of using the composition as a hotmelt adhesive for polyvinyl chloride.

    Abstract: A strip of highly reflective aluminum protected by a conversion coating and a light-permeable fluoropolymer coating which is non-adhesively interstitially mechanically bonded to the microscopic irregularities of the conversion coated surface. The highly reflective strip may be substituted for polished stainless steel and/or bi-metal and used under aggressive conditions for a prolonged period without deleteriously affecting the initial D/I (distinctness of reflected image) of the shaped strip. The strip of arbitrary length may be shaped in rolling dies so that at least a portion of the strip has a radius of less than 10 mm without damaging or separating the fluoropolymer coating. The specific steps of the claimed process require starting with a bright-rolled clean strip which is conversion coated to carry a thin metal compound coating. The reflective conversion coated surface is coated with the fluoropolymer while maintaining at least 80% D/I.

The adhesive is a conductive silicone pressure sensitive adhesive containing (i) a silicone resin, (ii) a siloxane gum, (iii) a conductive particulate material, and optionally, (iv) a peroxide catalyst. Suitable conductive particulate materials are silver-clad glass fibers; spherical gold particles; spherical hollow glass microspheres coated with silver, gold, nickel, or copper; or spherical particles of metal alloys of Sn/Cu, Pb/Sn, or Au/Sn. The adhesive can be applied as a ball or bump itself, in conjunction with a solder ball or bump, or in the form of tape sandwiched between the flip chip and substrate.

    Abstract: A method is provided for closing out the edges of a flexible ceramic insulation member including inner and outer mold line covering layers. A rigid, segmented, ceramic frame is placed around the edges of the insulation member and exposed edges of the inner and outer mold line covering layers are affixed to the ceramic frame. In one embodiment wherein the covering layers comprise fabrics, the outer fabric is bonded to the top surface and to a grooved portion of the side surface of the frame. In another embodiment wherein the outer cover layer comprises a metallic foil, clips on the edges of the frame are used to engage foil extensions. The ceramic frame is coated with a high emittance densifier coating.

    Abstract: A lighting fixture body and a lens, both formed of plastic which generates gas when heated, are bonded together, using a hot melt adhesive with adsorbent mixed therein, thereby preventing foams from residing in the interface between the plastic materials and the hot melt adhesive. The hot melt adhesive is mainly composed of styrene-ethylene-butylene block copolymer, and molecular sieve or other adsorbent having adsorbing cavities is added to the hot melt adhesive. After the hot melt adhesive is filled in the sealing grooves of the lighting fixture body, the anchoring parts of the lens are set in the hot melt adhesive and fastened mechanically with spring pegs. The hot melt adhesive solidifies in the sealing grooves, thereby fixing the lighting fixture body and the lens together.
