Switching Control Patents (Class 370/360)
  • Patent number: 8989194
Abstract: A network topology system for combining in-band hardware links for network redundancy with out-of-band hardware links for facile initialization in a network with centralized control architecture, wherein the combined use of in-band and out-of-band hardware links further reduces the overall hardware links required for centralized control. An initialization processor allows direct out-of-band hardware links between a plurality of centralized controllers to be used for initialization, while further allowing in-band hardware links for connections between two switches, and between a switch and a controller, wherein the use of in-band hardware links allows the same hardware links to convey both data and control communications, increasing redundancy, and reducing the number of hardware links required by the network domain as a whole.

Abstract: Various techniques can be used to handle frames within multi-stage switching fabric. For example, in one method, a frame and an associated frame header are received at a switching fabric stage. The associated frame header includes a first field and a second field. The method selects one or more fabric points of exit within the switching fabric stage, based on the second field. The first field is used to select one or more other fabric points of exit within another switching fabric stage, and thus two different fields within the associated frame header specify fabric points of exit. The method then sends the frame to the selected fabric points of exit within the switching fabric stage.

  • Patent number: 8937959
Abstract: A distributed switch may include a hierarchy with one or more levels of surrogate sub-switches (and surrogate bridge elements) that enable the distributed switch to scale bandwidth based on the size of the membership of a multicast group. When a sub-switch receives a multicast data frame, it forwards the packet to one of the surrogate sub-switches. Each surrogate sub-switch may then forward the packet to another surrogate in a different hierarchical level or to a destination computing device. Because the surrogates may transmit the data frame in parallel using two or more connection interfaces, the bandwidth used to forward the multicast packet increases for each surrogate used.

  • Patent number: 8929362
Abstract: A negotiation process is conducted between a controller and a target forwarding or switching device with respect to an abstract candidate device model for a forwarding plane. The abstract candidate device model is provided by a controller and indicates intended forwarding or switching behavior for the target device that a controller desires to have implemented on the target device. The intended behavior is specified in terms of mandatory and non-mandatory behavior. A hardware abstraction layer (HAL) for the target device analyzes the abstract candidate device model and decides whether the mandatory and optional behavior that is specified by the model is supported given the architecture of the target. The HAL informs the controller whether the intended behavior is supported by the target. Additional behavior may be proposed and accepted or not before the model is finalized. The finalized model may then be implemented and used to control forwarding behavior on the target device.

  • Patent number: 8792509
Abstract: A method and system provide in-band protection switch signaling in a communication system arranged as a point-to-multipoint tree. The point-to-multipoint tree includes a root node communicatively coupled to a plurality of leaf nodes through both a working link and a protection link. Data is transferred through a current link of the point-to-multipoint tree. The current link is either the working link or the protection link. A fault is detected in the current link in the point-to-multipoint tree. Each leaf node in the point-to-multipoint tree is notified of the fault using the current link. Upon receiving the notification, the root node and each leaf node switch to the other link of the working link and the protection link.

  • Patent number: 8782787
Abstract: Distribution of network processing load among a set of packet processing devices is improved by employing means for eliminating, controlling, or otherwise affecting redundant packet processing operations. In one embodiment, at least two packet processing devices are present, both capable of processing data packets flowing therethrough, such as, inspecting, detecting, and filtering data packets pursuant to one or more filters from a filter set. Redundancy is controlled by providing or enabling either or both of the packet processing devices with capability for detecting during its said inspection of said data packets that, for example, one or more filters had been previously executed on said data packets by the other packet processing device, and then not executing the previously-executed filters on said data packets.

  • Patent number: 8767722
Abstract: A switching network includes an upper tier having a master switch and a lower tier including a plurality of lower tier entities. The master switch, which has a plurality of ports each coupled to a respective lower tier entity, implements on each of the ports a plurality of virtual ports each corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of remote physical interfaces (RPIs) at the lower tier entity coupled to that port. Data traffic communicated between the master switch and RPIs is queued within virtual ports that correspond to the RPIs with which the data traffic is communicated. The master switch applies data handling to the data traffic in accordance with a control policy based at least upon the virtual port in which the data traffic is queued, such that the master switch applies different policies to data traffic queued to two virtual ports on the same port of the master switch.

Abstract: Techniques for facilitating the operation of one or more virtual networks are described. In some examples, a system may include a first controller node device configured to control operation of a first set of elements in the one or more virtual networks, wherein the first set of elements includes a first server device. The system may also include a second controller node device configured to control operation of a second set of elements in the one or more virtual networks, wherein the second set of elements includes the second server device. The first controller node device and the second controller node device are peers according to a peering protocol by which the first controller node device and the second controller node device exchange information relating to the operation of the first set of elements and the second set of elements.

  • Patent number: 8751649
Abstract: A method is provided for a port management system in which a switch is automatically provisioned with network resources. A command or set of commands are stored and automatically executed on the switch upon the occurrence of a defined network event. The command or set of commands may be associated with one or more ports on the switch. • Patent number: 8750319
Abstract: A data bridge controls the transfer of packets between different priority network fabrics of a closed network, e.g. high and low priority network fabrics a vehicular network. Processing circuitry determines first priority routing of a first packet from the first network fabric to the second network fabric based on packet content type of the first packet and priority conditions of the second network fabric. A determination is also made regarding whether a second packet is to be delivered from the second network fabric to the first network fabric. If the second packet is to be delivered, second priority routing of the second packet is made based on packet content type of the second packet and priority conditions of the first network fabric.

Abstract: The present invention provides, according to one example, a method of route aggregation in a network. The network may include at least two switches connected by a link. The method includes the steps of arranging virtual connection identifiers (VCIs) into groups based on a common prefix. Each of the groups corresponds to an outgoing port of a next switch. The method further includes the steps of allocating a VCI at the incoming port of the next switch, and informing the outgoing port of the previous switch of the allocated VCI number. The step of arranging may include splitting all available VCIs into N subgroups, where N is the number of outgoing ports on the switch on the other end of the link.

  • Patent number: 8737412
Abstract: FSs (16a to 16h) are each connected to IFSs (14a to 14x). Each of the FSs (16a to 16h) transmits a setting frame (60) that includes an FS number to the connected IFSs (14a to 14x). Each of the IFSs (14a to 14x) registers, in an LAG setting table, the FS numbers included in the received setting frames (60) and ports that have received the same in association with each other. Then, each of the IFSs (14a to 14x) sorts ports (52a to 52h) in an order of the associated FS numbers, and sets each of LAGs (18a to 18x) in a common order.
