    Abstract: Described are conductor track structures on a nonconductive support material, especially fine conductor track structures, which are comprised of a base containing a heavy metal and a metallized coating applied to this, and a method for their production. The invention is characterized in that the heavy metal base in the area of the conductor track structures contains heavy metal nuclei, which have been created by the breakup of an organic nonconductive heavy metal complex, and that the support material contains microporous or microrough support particles to which the heavy metal nuclei are bound. An outstanding strength of adhesion of the deposited metal conductor tracks is achieved. The method is especially suitable also for the production of three-dimensional circuit supports.

    Abstract: Changes in the infrared reflection spectrum of a thin film of silica-like resinous material sandwiched between metal electrodes can be induced by applying an electric potential to a top electrode which is semitransparent. Characteristic infrared absorption lines change in proportion to a small electric current flowing through the material. These changes occur with response times of the order of seconds, and show time constants of the order of minutes to reach stationary values.

    Abstract: A composite raw material is subjected to masking, and then the composite raw material is pretreated. After that, a surface of the composite raw material is activated, and a metal catalyst is applied to a joining surface of the composite raw material and a surface of a masking tape. Subsequently, an electroless plating treatment is performed to form a plating layer on the joining surface of the composite raw material and the surface of the masking tape. It is preferable that the thickness of the plating layer is 5 to 100 &mgr;m. After that, the masking tape which has been stuck to the composite raw material is removed, and then a drying treatment is performed for the composite raw material having the plating layer formed only on the joining surface.

    Abstract: Often, metal matrix composites (MMC's) lack adequate machinability and possess excessive abrasiveness because hard ceramic materials, such as silicon carbide, are used as the reinforcement phase. To make a metal matrix composite body having a more machinable and less abrasive surface, an MMC comprising an aluminum nitride reinforcement is formed on the surface of the body. In one embodiment, a layer is provided to a permeable mass or preform at the surface at issue, the layer featuring at least a reduced loading of ceramic filler material, and sometimes no ceramic material at all. The reduced loading is achieved by incorporating a fugitive material into the coating layer. Molten matrix metal is caused to infiltrate the permeable mass or preform and the coating layer to produce a macrocomposite body comprising a metal matrix composite coating and substrate.

    Abstract: A thermal insulating ceramic layer for use on metal alloy components exposed to hostile thermal and chemical environment, such as a gas turbine engine used to generate electricity. The preferred thermal barrier layer is formed using dense vertical cracking and formed of zirconia that is partially stabilized by yttria in a preferred amount of less than 4 weight percent and about 1 weight percent Hafnia. The ceramic layer is optimized to protect the underlying superalloy component from erosion, chipping, and handling, while reducing the cost of the protective layer. An alternative method of preparing the thermal barrier coating uses electron beam physical vapor deposition.
