  • Publication number: 20080306177
Abstract: Conventional curable polymers tend to shrink upon curing whilst low shrinkage ultraviolet light curing polymers have a problem with respect to curing below surface areas of a component. By providing light transmitting elements and/or local ultraviolet light source precursors, greater depth of ultraviolet curing can be achieved and therefore enhanced acceptability with regard to component manufacture. The light transmitting elements may be formed by optic fibers or coatings to existing reinforcing fibers or through consideration of the refractive index of the cured and uncured polymer to create light transmission paths through the component. Ultraviolet light source precursors can be activated by heat or a “seed” light exposure or vibration to create localised ultraviolet curing of the polymer thereabout.

  • Publication number: 20080286152
Abstract: The invention relates to novel polymer-based microstructures, with outstanding shape accuracy and cost-effective processing. The novel polymers are based on hyperbranched macromolecules and enable remarkable property combination such as reduced shrinkage and associated low stress, high shape fidelity and high aspect ratio in patterned microstructures, with additional benefit of fast and low-cost production methods. The invention also relates to methods to produce these microstructures. The polymer-based microstructures are relevant for, but not limited to micro- and nano- technologies applications, including lab-on-a-chip devices, opto-electronic and micro- electromechanical devices, optical detection methods, in fields of use as diverse as automotive, aerospace, information technologies, medical and biotechnologies, and energy systems.

  • Patent number: 7452577
Abstract: Admixtures either of a plastic and an elastomer, a plurality of thermoplastics, or a plurality of elastomers are formed into a shaped item for an article (such as a dynamic seal, a static seal, a gasket, a pump diaphragm, a hose, or an o-ring), and the thermoplastic is then cross-linked (cured). Radiation (preferably, electron beam radiation) is used for the cross-linking and for generating bi-modal molecules from the elastomer and the thermoplastic when both a thermoplastic and an elastomer are in the admixture.

  • Publication number: 20080274201
Abstract: This invention provides novel methods for the formation of biocompatible membranes around biological materials using photopolymerization of water soluble molecules. The membranes can be used as a covering to encapsulate biological materials or biomedical devices, as a “glue” to cause more than one biological substance to adhere together, or as carriers for biologically active species. Several methods for forming these membranes are provided. Each of these methods utilizes a polymerization system containing water-soluble macromers, species, which are at once polymers and macromolecules capable of further polymerization. The macromers are polymerized using a photoinitiator (such as a dye), optionally a cocatalyst, optionally an accelerator, and radiation in the form of visible or long wavelength UV light. The reaction occurs either by suspension polymerization or by interfacial polymerization.
