  • Publication number: 20030041522
Abstract: A self-closing system for a screen door that slides in a doorway includes an elongated tube for attachment to the rear stile of the sliding door in a substantially vertical orientation. A housing that contains an internal pulley is attached to the top end of the tube. A cable is provided having a first end for attachment to the front jamb of the doorway. From the doorway, the cable extends into the housing and runs around the pulley. From the pulley, the cable exits the housing and extends into the tube where the second end of the cable is connected to a weight. The weight is movable within the tube to maintain a constant tension on the cable. The cable tension, in turn, applies a force on the pulley and housing. This force acts to bias the sliding door into a closed position.

Abstract: This invention relates to methods and apparatus to control the light exposure of the skin. One objective is to increase the exposure during periods of common deficient exposure such as for dark skin persons on winter days in areas far from the equator. Another objective is to decrease the exposure during periods of common overexposure such as for light skin persons during spring and summer days in bright environments. A novel feature of the invention is the use of lamps for whole body irradiation while showering or bathing during dark seasons. The whole body exposure enables the use of very low irradiance levels to provide an enhanced probability of beneficial effects and to reduce the possibility of harmful effects of the ultraviolet light Another novel feature is the use of an adjustable ultraviolet light transmitting building window or automobile sunroof to increase the sunlight exposure on cold days when a deficiency in exposure due to closed windows is common.

  • Patent number: 5560149
Abstract: A storm resistant window has a window frame and a window sash of preferably-aluminum extruded frame members, a glass and polymer safety glass, clamping glazing beads that bear sealingly on the glass, and a sash locking clasp arrangement. The window resists impacts characteristic of windblown hurricane debris, for example, and is resilient enough to damp wind loads induced by 75 mph (120 kph) winds, with resilient arching and twisting of the frame members. The clamping glazing beads are snap-fitted to lock tightly in the associated superstructure around the glazing, deforming resilient weatherseals against the outer surface of the safety glass. The safety glass has coextensive annealed glass and polymer layers. An additional polymer strip and a bead of adhesive affix the glazing on the inside for resisting abrasion of the polymer side against the frame. The window includes a latch for a positive locking connection between the frame and the sash within the frame.

Abstract: A device for closing a sliding door comprises a pair of slidable telescoped tubes. The device is secured at its outer ends to the sliding door and to a supporting door frame. A compression spring is located within the tubes urging the sliding door to return by itself from its open to its closed position. A string extends between the end portions of the tubes to prevent the tubes from being separated and a clamping means is adapted for locking the sliding door in any desired open position.

  • Patent number: 5528862
Abstract: A unitary protective roller cover adapted for use in a sliding gate system which includes a horizontally disposed gate having an upper horizontal gate support rod guided by at least one grooved roller rotatably mounted on a stub shaft in a mounting bracket clamped to a vertical support post. The unitary protective cover includes a roller enclosure portion having an open bottom and an integral stub shaft and mounting bracket enclosure portion having an open bottom. The bracket cover portion has a pair of spaced vertical side walls merging with a top portion covering the stub shaft and a portion of the mounting bracket. The stub shaft enclosure portion merges with the roller enclosure portion to form an open bottom unitary structure whereby the roller, stub shaft and a substantial portion of the mounting bracket are environmentally protected and entry of fingers and clothing beneath the roller is precluded.

  • Patent number: 5513469
Abstract: A retractable sliding door apparatus includes a door housing, a sliding door slidably mounted in the door housing, and a retractable spring mechanism mounted to the door housing and to the sliding door for retracting an open door to a closed position. The retractable spring mechanism includes a spring drum having a constant force retractable spring attached to it and in which the constant force retractable spring has one end attached to a bracket mounted on the door. The constant force retractable spring is made of a spiral strip of steel which has been heat treated while coiled to a predetermined curvature so that when the steel is extended, the stress in the steel resists the loading force at an approximate constant rate so that the sliding door is opened against a generally constant force and returns from an open to a closed position at a generally constant rate of movement under the force of a constant force spring to thereby avoid the door slamming shut.

Abstract: A window assembly comprises, a first base member and a second base member, both being of general T-shaped configuration, and having a middle portion and two transversely extending arms. The arms have a longitudinal channel and a plurality of longitudinal slots therein. The middle portion of the second base member is slidably insertable in the longitudinal channel of the first base member. A window assembly further comprises first and second window panes being removably inserted in the longitudinal slots formed in the arms of the first and second base members. A plurality of seals are positioned in the slots and serve to sealingly support the first and second window panes in the respective sots. A seal is also positioned between the second base member middle support and the first base member longitudinal channel and is in sealing engagement therewith. A plurality of plastic blocks are positioned between the first and second base members and are in sliding engagement therewith.

  • Patent number: 5422552
Abstract: An automated actuator is fabricated in kit form and adapted to be assembled and disassembled for use with sliding doors, windows or other similar panels. The actuator includes a support column which is adjustable to be braced at the existing door jamb at either side of the door frame to move the panel. Mounting of the actuator does not require the surrounding frame or wall structure to be structurally altered. Circuitry for the actuator ceases the sliding movement of the door when the door meets resistance, such as by a child or animal in the path of the door, and re-tests for the resistance to determine whether the door should continue along the intended path.

  • Patent number: 5421125
Abstract: Sliding windows are used in machine cabs to allow exchange of air between the atmosphere and the interior of the cab. When a panel is moveable a seal must be provided to prevent the ingress of water into the cab. The subject window assembly includes a sliding panel having four radiused corners and also a seal which is positioned in a side portion of the sliding panel to prevent the ingress of water. The seal is continuous around the corners and extends therefrom to contact a stationary panel. This arrangement of components provides a sliding window which provides a seal which prevent ingress of water into the cab.

  • Patent number: 5363596
Abstract: An improved seal for a sliding window pane in a vehicular backlite. The improved seal has a mounting base secured within a receiving recess presented from a fixed member in a window frame. A hinge is supported from the mounting block, and the mounting base, in turn, supports a pair of sealing lips that are preferably formed integrally with the mounting base. The sealing lips are adapted to engage the exterior surface of a sliding window pane. Opening the sliding window pane permits the hinge to pivot the sealing lips to an open position wherein the first lip is disposed out of engagement with the exterior surface of the window pane, and the second sealing lip is moved into the displacement axis of the sliding window pane. Upon closure, the sliding window pane engages the second sealing lip to pivot the hinge and drive the first sealing lip into engagement with the exterior surface of the sliding window pane.
