Abstract: It has been discovered that compositions comprising magnetically heatable entities (MHEs), therapeutic agents and optional carriers such as hydrogels can be piloted from an injection point in a blood vessel to a specific location of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using for example, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device for propelling, steering and tracking of MHEs. Once the MHEs have reached their target location at or near the desired blood vessel of the BBB, an alternating magnetic field causes the MHEs to controllably heat up, thereby reversibly increasing the permeability of the BBB and allowing the therapeutic (or cytotoxic) agent to enter brain tissue.

Abstract: An electromagnetic radiation activated device comprises a property changing material and at least one functionalized fullerene that upon irradiation of the functionalized fullerenes with electromagnetic radiation of one or more frequencies a thermally activated chemical or physical transformation occurs in the property changing material. The thermal activated transformation of the property changing material is triggered by the heating or combustion of the functionalized fullerenes upon their irradiation. The device can include a chemical agent that is embedded in the property changing material and is released when the material is heated by the functionalized fullerenes upon irradiation.

Abstract: Unsaturated fatty alcohol alkoxylates, processes for making them, and methods of using them are disclosed. In one aspect, a monounsaturated fatty alcohol alkoxylate is made by reducing a metathesis-derived monounsaturated alkyl ester, followed by alkoxylation of the resulting monounsaturated alcohol. Microscopy reveals that the monounsaturated alkoxylates have isotropic and lamellar phases over a wider range of actives levels compared with their saturated analogs. This attribute expands formulating latitude for many end-use applications. The unsaturated fatty alcohol alkoxylates are valuable in, for example, agricultural solvents, nonionic emulsifiers for agricultural compositions, hard surface cleaners, laundry detergents, specialty foams, additives or surfactants for paints or coatings, and surfactant compositions for enhanced oil recovery.
