  • Patent number: 7803419
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for rapid cooling of a large substrate in a vacuum environment. A first cooled plate is brought into close proximity with one surface of a flat substrate. The spatial volume between the first cooling plate and the substrate is sealed and brought to a higher pressure than the surrounding vacuum level to increase the cooling efficiency. A second cooled plate is brought into close proximity with the opposite surface of the flat substrate. A second spatial volume between the second cooling plate and the substrate is sealed and the gas pressure is equalized to the gas pressure in the first spatial volume. The equalization of the gas pressure on both sides of the flat substrate eliminates deflection of the substrate and bending stress in the substrate.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for coating metal oxide on a PDMS surface. The method includes preparing a mixture that contains a sol-gel precursor, reacting the mixture to form a preconverted sol-gel precursor, where the preconverted sol-gel precursor does not diffuse into PDMS and is not in the form of a gel, forming a reactive PDMS surface, applying the preconverted sol-gel precursor onto the reactive PDMS surface, binding the preconverted sol-gel precursor to the re-active PDMS surface, and converting the bound preconverted sol-gel precursor to a metal oxide to form a metal oxide coating on the PDMS surface. The present invention also provides a PDMS microfluidic device where one or more channels of the microfluidic device is provided with a metal oxide coating covalently bound only on the surface of the one or more channels.

Abstract: Low formaldehyde emission wood based panels are described. These wood based panels have an outer surface layer comprised of a resin composition comprising a naturally occurring component or derivative thereof which is chemically bound to an aromatic hydroxyl compound-aldehyde resin (ncPF). The advantages of having an outer surface layer of the resin composition comprising ncPF, is that the outer surface layer can act as a surface sealer to reduce migration of components from the core of the wood based panel to the surface. The outer surface layer is pleasing to the consumer because it forms light colored faces on the wood based panel. It is also a superior surface for after treatment, such as for example, painting, when compared to amino or phenol resins. In addition, the outer surface layer comprising the inventive resin composition comprising ncPF can lend added fire-retardancy to the wood based panel.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for painting dimpled golf balls that are moving along an endless conveyor. The method employs paint guns operating at a relatively low atomizing air pressure, and make contact with the golf ball surface at an angle between about 5° to 60°. The paint guns are continually in the on position and the paint neither coagulates in the gun nozzle nor forms puddles in the dimple cavities. The number of golf ball painted per gallon of paint is dramatically increased as is the number of ball painted per time period.

Abstract: An outer layer having an entanglement comprising an intermingling of cloaked hydrophilic guest and a hydrophobic polymer host, wherein molecules of the guest have been crosslinked with each other. Under certain circumstances, using complexes of the guest may be desirable or even necessary. The intermingling of the guest and host includes a physical tangling, whether it also comprises crosslinking by primary bonding (e.g., chemical/covalent bonding) there-between. Also a method of producing an outer layer having such an entanglement, including the steps of: temporarily cloaking at least a portion of the hydrophilic groups of the guest; intermingling at least a portion of the cloaked groups with a porous polymeric structure by diffusing the guest with cloaked groups into at least a portion of the structure's pores; within the pores, crosslinking at least a portion of the molecules of the guest with the guest; and removing the cloaking. Cloaking may be performed by silylation or acylation.

Abstract: A diamond-like carbon film (DLC film) is formed on the surface of a base material made of an inorganic material, such as ceramics, or the like, or an organic material, such as resin, or the like. The surface of the resultant DLC film is treated with plasma, or the like, so as to be activated. Various monomers having biocompatibility, etc., are graft-polymerized to the activated surface of the DLC film, whereby a polymer layer is formed from the monomers grafted to the surface of the DLC film. Thus, the base material coated with the DLC film modified with a polymer which does not readily separate can be realized.
