Abstract: An adhesive composition is provided which is capable of bonding to metallic surfaces which are contaminated with oil or oily residue. An adhesion improving additive is added to the base adhesive/coating composition which enables the adhesive to achieve better bonding to oily substrates. Addition of the adhesion improving additive improves the adhesion of adhesives, sealants, and coatings to the oily substrates used in the automotive and industrial markets. The an adhesion improving additive is an aliphatic molecule of at least 8 carbon atoms or having an aliphatic end group or side chain of least 6 carbon atoms, and wherein the adhesion improving additive comprises a boiling point of at least 30° C.

Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for transforming non-planar or planar precursor materials in an appropriate vehicle under the appropriate conditions to create dispersions of planar particles with stoichiometric ratios of elements equal to that of the feedstock or precursor materials, even after selective forces settling. In particular, planar particles disperse more easily, form much denser coatings (or form coatings with more interparticle contact area), and anneal into fused, dense films at a lower temperature and/or time than their counterparts made from spherical nanoparticles. These planar particles may be nanoflakes that have a high aspect ratio. The resulting dense films formed from nanoflakes are particularly useful in forming photovoltaic devices. In one embodiment, at least one set of the particles in the ink may be inter-metallic flake particles (microflake or nanoflake) containing at least one group IB-IIIA inter-metallic alloy phase.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for forming a patterned material layer on a structure, by condensing a vapor to a solid condensate layer on a surface of the structure and then localized removal of selected regions of the condensate layer by directing a beam of energy at the selected regions, exposing the structure at the selected regions. A material layer is then deposited on top of the solid condensate layer and the exposed structure at the selected regions. Then the solid condensate layer and regions of the material layer that were deposited on the solid condensate layer are removed, leaving a patterned material layer on the structure.

Abstract: A processing method according to the present invention coats a polar liquid film or forms an inorganic film on a surface of an organic film formed on a substrate as a protective film. The processing method comprises a modifying step of curing an organic film by irradiating the organic film with electron beams by means of an electron-beam irradiation device in a rare gas atmosphere, and an applying step of applying a polar liquid to the modified surface of the organic film or a film forming step of forming an inorganic film on the organic film. The organic film is cured and affinity for the polar liquid or the inorganic film is imparted to the organic film.

Abstract: Methods of fabricating complex three-dimensional structures on patterned substrates and related compositions are provided. The methods involve depositing on the substrate a block copolymer material that is “mismatched” to the substrate pattern, and then ordering the material to form a complex three-dimensional structure. According to various embodiments, the copolymer material mismatches the substrate pattern in that the symmetry and/or length scale of its bulk morphology differs from that of the pattern. When ordered, a balance between the physics that determines the bulk block copolymer morphology and the physics that determines the substrate surface interfacial interactions results in a thermodynamically stable complex three-dimensional film that varies in a direction perpendicular to the substrate and has a morphology that differs from its bulk morphology.
