  • Patent number: 4796823
Abstract: A spool for a photographic film comprising 50 to 99.8 wt. % of polystyrene resin, 0.05 to 2.2 wt. % of dimethylpolysiloxane and/or modified dimethylpolysiloxane of which a part of methyl groups are substituted by carboxyalkyl groups, 0.5 to 6 wt. % of rubber and 0.05 to 3 wt. % of carbon black having a pH of 5 to 9 and a mean particle size of 10 to 120 m.mu., and the outer surface of the flange of the spool is made rough so that the reflectance of the incident light at an incident angle of 75 degrees is less than 40% in the direction of regular reflection at an angle of 75 degrees.Static frictional coefficient of this spool against metal is small, and thereby photographic film can be drawn out of a photographic film cartridge smoothly to the last. Breakage of the perforations of photographic film does not occur. The outer surface of the flange of the spool is not glossy and its reflectance is low.

  • Patent number: 4784888
Abstract: An improved plastic product that enables adjacent portions thereof to be easily folded into juxtaposed relationship. The product has at least one elongated hinge that extends between sides of the product in along the length and/or the width thereof. The hinge is formed by utilizing an angled or curved cutting tool to create a continuous slit which in a preferred configuration (when viewed in profile) is generally L-shaped so that it extends from one surface of the product to a first location that is within the products' body and then extends therein from the first location to a second location also within the thickness of the body. The slit opens onto the one surface and thereby forms a flexible bridge integral with those portions of the product adjacent thereto, the bridge permitting such adjacent portions to be flexibly folded into juxtaposed relationship.

  • Patent number: 4764409
Abstract: A fiber reinforced structure formed by layers of fiber having a metallic reinforcement element disposed therebetween. The metallic element includes bent portions or fingers formed at the edges thereof, which extend toward the outer surfaces of the layers of fiber. The fiber layers and metallic element are held in place by resin injected during a molding process. The bent portions of the metallic element bridge the inner plane surfaces of the layers of fiber to strengthen the areas at the resin plane where stress areas normally causes the layers of fiber to separate.

  • Patent number: 4664960
Abstract: Designed tailormade nonequilibrium synthetic disordered materials are provided containing nonperiodically distributed local environments whose position and type are controlled to obtain specific properties which can be coupled or decoupled one from another and collectively from the constraints implied by an ordered structure. Atoms or groups of atoms can be placed in the matrix in specific designed positions to compensate the spins to obtain unusual physical and chemical properties. The compositional variation which produces the required nonequilibrium "multi-disordered" materials is accomplished by selectively depositing desired atoms and groups of atoms into designed locations to permit the construction of a true three-dimensionally engineered material. Where order is an engineering need, it can be designed in a local scale or interspersed in varying amounts including layers through the material to create new material functions.

  • Patent number: 4409272
Abstract: Potassium hydroxide or another alkaline potassium compound is used to adjust the pH of an aqueous color developing clay coating composition in the manufacture of color developing material for use in pressure-sensitive or similar copying systems. This reduces the decline in reactivity with time of such material and increases initial print intensity compared with conventional material in which the corresponding sodium compound is used for pH adjustment. Especially good results are obtained where the material being coated is a paper of high acidity such as results from rosin/alum sizing.

  • Patent number: 4357363
Abstract: An element for the analysis or transport of liquid, especially aqueous liquids, contains a structure comprising a plurality of heat-stable, organo-polymeric particles non-swellable in and impermeable to the liquid, and an adhesive concentrated at particle surface areas contiguous to adjacent particles bonding the particles into a coherent, three-dimensional lattice that is non-swellable in the liquid. A substantial portion of the particle surface area in this lattice structure is therefore effectively free from adhesive. The lattice structure has interconnected void spaces among the particles representing a total void volume of about 25 to 80 percent to provide for transport of the liquid. The adhesive comprises an organic polymer different from that of the particles and insoluble in the liquid under analysis. The amount of adhesive in the structure is less than 10 weight percent of the particles.

  • Patent number: 4302513
Abstract: During manufacture, a rubber or other elastic sheet is forcibly stretched out and smoothly affixed to an adhesive spread out on a backing of cardboard or similar material. The sheet is suitable for receiving typing from a typewriter, and the entire assembly is suitable for insertion and bending over the roll of a common typewriter. During operation, a person types a message on the sheet, removes the assembly from the typewriter and forcibly peels the sheet off the backing. The sheet returns to its original unstretched shape, and the typed words, along with the spaces between the words, occupy less space than those of a similar message typed on ordinary paper. When used with a Xerox or similar copying machine, the reduction in the size of the words and spaces permits the use of many more words per final, normal size page of reproduced document.
