  • Patent number: 8697992
Abstract: A cable assembly for use in a hydrocarbon well of extensive depth. The cable assembly may be effectively employed at well depths of over 30,000 feet. Indeed, embodiments of the assembly may be effectively employed at depths of over 50,000 feet while powering and directing downhole equipment at a downhole end thereof. The assembly may be made up of a comparatively high break strength uphole cable portion coupled to a lighter downhole cable portion. This configuration helps to ensure the structural integrity of the assembly in light of its own load when disposed in a well to such extensive depths. Additionally, the assembly may be employed at such depths with an intervening connector sub having a signal amplification mechanism incorporated therein to alleviate concern over telemetry between the surface of the oilfield and the downhole equipment.

Abstract: A busway for high voltage, high current applications in which connections can be made at arbitrary distance and spacing along its length is made with an insert that is a continuous semi-rigid insulator with continuous conductors installed in it. The busway is fabricated with an insert that is a long flat insulating strip with conductors installed in it, up to hundreds of feet if desired, and rolled up for shipment and handling. When installed, shell segments are installed end-to-end, then the insert is unrolled, folded into an inverted “U” shape, then installed in the shell segments as a continuous insulator and conductor. The inverted “U” shape tends to repel moisture that may enter from the top, and no segment-to-segment connectors are needed.

Abstract: A flexible, moldable material is provided with bi-conductive surfaces that can be fabricated using simple, cost-effective, and scalable deposition processes. The material is a composite structure composed of two conductive or semi-conductive sheets sandwiching a thin polymer insulator, all bonded together at their interfaces. The two functionalized sheets are made of conductive or semi-conductive particles dispersed through a flexible polymer. In one embodiment, a protective coating over the outer conductive sheets is applied to improve the durability of the composite structure. The material can be patterned into custom shapes and patterns with sizes ranging from meso-scale (millimeters) to macro-scale (meters) dimensions. The thicknesses of the components can also be tailored to be thin, such as a few hundred microns, yet the material maintains very good durability.
