  • Patent number: 7678838
Abstract: A method of preparing nanothin polymer films having uniform and selectively sized pores utilizing pore forming templates. Lipids and pore forming templates are dissolved into a first solution. The solvent is removed thereby creating a lipid bilayer with pore forming templates dispersed throughout. The bilayer is hydrated and monomers and crosslinkers are added to create a second solution. A nanothin film with pore forming templates is created through polymerization of said second solution. The pore forming templates are dissolved into a third solution by addition of a chemical in which the pore forming template is soluble, but the lipid bilayer is insoluble. This third solution is separated from the mixture leaving a nanothin polymer film with pores of a uniform thickness and surface area.

Abstract: The present invention relates to biomedical foam articles for the wound sector which are formed by spraying a polymeric dispersion onto a wound. The polymeric dispersion being sprayed onto a wound surface forms a three-dimensional body which conforms to the spatial shape of the wound and which, as well as covering the wound surface, ensures a complete and accurately fitted packing of the wound in the depth dimension as well as the other dimensions. The biomedical foam articles of the present invention are particularly useful for treating chronic wounds.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing thermosets such as epoxy resins includes adding expandable hollow microspheres, which expand with temperature as shown in the accompanying graph, to the base thermoset components in the liquid phase and applying heat treatment to the mixture so formed causing the micropsheres to expand during or after curing of the thermoset. This results in a toughening mechanism caused by compressive residual stress around the microspheres which significantly increases the specific fracture energy of the epoxy resin.

Abstract: A method of preparing a low-density material and precursor for forming a low-density material is provided. An aqueous mixture of inorganic primary component and a blowing agent is formed, the mixture is dried and optionally ground to form an expandable precursor. Such a precursor is then fired with activation of the blowing agent being controlled such that it is activated within a predetermined optimal temperature range. Control of the blowing agent can be accomplished via a variety of means including appropriate distribution throughout the precursor, addition of a control agent into the precursor, or modification of the firing conditions such as oxygen deficient or fuel rich environment, plasma heating etc.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of preparing a fused aerogel-polymer composite in which aerogel and an organic polymer is mixed in a dry state to adsorb polymer particles on the surface of the aerogel and are then subjected to thermal treatment, thus forming a polymer coating on the aerogel. The fused aerogel-polymer composite can be used for thermal insulation in a variety of applications. The fused aerogel-polymer composite exhibits high thermal insulation properties and superior physical strength and processability while still maintaining the properties of an aerogel that does not have a polymer coated on its surface.
